Part of the Leave It Better Mindset
There is something about stepping onto a trail in Transylvania County that feels like the beginning of a really good day. Maybe it is the sound of water nearby or the way the light filters through the trees. With 250 waterfalls and miles of forest to explore, it is easy to get caught up in the moment. But the best days outside start before you even reach the trailhead.
Leave It Better is a collection of simple ways to care for this place while you are here. One of those principles is “Preparedness, Please,” which focuses on showing up ready so you can have a safe, smooth experience outdoors. Being prepared is not just about you. It helps prevent accidents, reduces strain on local resources, and makes the trails safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

✔
Plan ahead.
Most places in the forest do not have cell service, so it is best to plan ahead before you head out. Look up trail maps and directions in advance by downloading them to your phone, using a trail app in offline mode, or picking up a paper map. If you are relying on your phone, make sure it is fully charged.

✔
Know your limits.
Choose a trail that matches your comfort level, and give yourself permission to take breaks along the way. Stop when you need to, sit for a minute, drink some water, and take in the view, maybe even stop and smell the flowers while you are at it. When in doubt, turn around. A good day on the trail is not about pushing through—it is about feeling good while you are out there.

✔
Share the trail & stay on the path.
Be familiar with trail etiquette so everyone can enjoy their time outside. Bikers yield to hikers, and everyone yields to horses. Downhill hikers step aside for those climbing uphill. Keep to marked trails and follow posted signs to stay on the safest path and help avoid unnecessary damage to the surrounding forest. A little awareness goes a long way in making the experience better for everyone you pass.

✔
Gear Up.
Flip flops are better saved for after the hike. Wearing the right shoes helps prevent a twisted ankle or unexpected fall, so opt for footwear with good grip and support. Keep your pets leashed and keep them close along the trail. Before you head out, take a quick look at the weather and pack accordingly with extra layers and a rain jacket, just in case.

✔
Stay fueled, stay hydrated.
Bring plenty of water & snacks! Hiking on an empty stomach is no fun for anyone, and getting dehydrated can lead to serious problems when you’re out in nature. Bring food & water for your pets, too!
