AN EVENING WITH CLINT BOWMAN AND LOBLOLLY PRESS

AN EVENING WITH CLINT BOWMAN AND LOBLOLLY PRESS

Highland Books is pleased to host an unforgettable evening with Loblolly Press as they celebrate the importance of independent bookstores and presses. The event will take place at the Mary C. Jenkins Center, 221 Mills Avenue, Brevard, on September 22, 2024, at 6:00pm. The evening’s headliner, Clint Bowman, will read from If Lost, his debut collection inspired by the mountains, forests, animals, and people of Appalachia. The evening of powerful readings and community connection will also feature readings by Loblolly Press writers with forthcoming projects: Emma Ensley, Cheryl Whitehead, and Andrew Mack. This is a unique opportunity to meet the authors, hear their work read aloud, purchase books, and have them signed. Loblolly Press is an independent press based out of Asheville, North Carolina, that is dedicated to publishing contemporary poetry, short fiction, and novels from emerging and marginalized writers across the South. Their goal is to publish writers with a distinctly Southern voice from communities and experiences not always represented in traditional publishing. They are striving to create a community of writers and readers who feel deeply connected to the work they publish because they can see themselves represented within it. Clint Bowman is a native of Davidson County, North Carolina. His debut chapbook, Pretty Sh!t, was published in May 2023 by Bottlecap Press. Clint is the co-founder and facilitator of the Dark City Poets Society (DCPS) in Black Mountain, NC, where he currently lives with his family. When Clint isn’t volunteering his time to the DCPS, he... Read More
2024 White Squirrel Day

2024 White Squirrel Day

10th Annual White Squirrel Day This year is the 10th Annual White Squirrel Day. For those new to the event White Squirrel Day is the way we celebrate Groundhog Day in Brevard, North Carolina. The event will be held at the Mary C. Jenkins Community Center located at (221 Mills Ave, Brevard, NC 28712) a quick walk from downtown. The event begins at 10am and we hope to see you there. The public is invited to attend and meet Brevard’s official white squirrel ambassador, Pisgah Penny, in person as she officiates over the festivities. Pisgah Penny, the pride of Brevard Wildlife often provides us humans with some of our favorite mascots. There’s Smoky the Bear, Tony the Tiger, Bucky Beaver to name a few. But how about Pisgah Penny? Not only is this white squirrel the pride of Brevard but she is a real, live animal who thanks to innate powers can do what groundhogs do so famously. Brevard is all about waterfalls and white squirrels “Brevard is all about waterfalls and white squirrels,” says Ann Sharpsteen, founder of Brevard’s annual White Squirrel Day held on February 2 each year to coincide with Groundhog Day. On this widely celebrated holiday (at least in Brevard) Pisgah Penny will summon her superpowers to forecast the end of winter. But, upping her groundhog counterpart, this squirrel also knows something about sports. Her trick bag includes predicting the winner of next month’s Super Bowl. “It’s a fun event,” says Sharpsteen, who founded White... Read More
