Transylvania County may be short on Disneyesque costumed characters, but its storybook charm and opportunities for adventure have delighted the young — and the young at heart — for over a century. It’s a natural amusement park with thrilling rides, magical scenery, interesting wildlife, hands-on arts and education, a killer toy store in the center of downtown Brevard and what might possibly be the best natural waterslide around – Sliding Rock.
Between the forests, the rivers, the lakes and the waterfalls, there are countless sites for family camping, picnicking, cycling and just letting young imaginations run wild. And if that isn’t enough to entice the child in your backseat, perhaps they just need to spend a little time with the salamanders over at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education or get the lowdown on Saturn’s Rings up at PARI. Crafty kids will appreciate family-friendly classes at several of the studios located on the 276 Art tour, including Mud Dabbers. And almost every single one of Transylvania County’s festivals has dedicated kid space and more things to excite your favorite elementary-schooler than she could shake a pixie-stick at. So when you’re planning your next family vacation, the question is not, “What can the kids do?” but “How can we possibly do it all?”
