Learn the top ways to select the ideal fly for fishing current water, weather and hatch conditions.
One of the most common questions anglers ask is, “What fly are they eating?” This course teaches you how to select a fly to match what the trout are eating. You will learn how to make streamside observations and select a fly for the situation. The course will be a combination of classroom and practical field sampling. In the classroom, you will learn about the “five seasons” and the active insects during each season. One will also learn about the types of flies for various hatch stages and how to select flies for the water type and behavior of the insect. On the river, you will sample insects and determine an appropriate fly.
Participants should be prepared to go outside and bring waders, your own lunch, and a notebook.
