This spring, the Brevard High School Thespian Society brings Stephen Sondheim and James Lapines beloved musical, Into The Woods, to the stage—blending familiar characters like Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack, and Rapunzel into a story that starts out playful and quickly becomes something much more unexpected.
Most people think they know how fairy tales go. Wishes granted, problems solved, happy endings. – But Into the Woods has other ideas.
What begins as a collection of classic fairy tales slowly turns into a deeper look at choices, consequences, and what really happens after happily ever after. Its a punchy mix of funny, chaotic, and at times a little more realistic in its story telling.
Originally premiering on Broadway in 1987, Into the Woods has remained a favorite for decades thanks to its sharp humor and unforgettable score (it is Sondheim after all). But what makes this production especially engaging is seeing those themes come to life through a high school cast—where the questions at the heart of the show feel very close to home.
Audiences can expect a lively, imaginative performance that leans into both the humor and the darker edges of the story. Theres plenty of energy, a few twists people may not see coming, and moments that stick with you longer than youd expect from a show that starts with beloved and classic fairy tales.
