As a designated Wildlife Refuge, it supports vital pollinators in the Pisgah National Forest. A Warm Wel-Comb
Up the road from Killer Bees, the Southern Highlands Reserve is appropriately celebrated as a spectacular, native Blue Ridge plant arboretum, research center, and an A+ spot for scenic views. Gorgeous gardens depend on happy bees. Over the last decade, Reserve staff noticed that “feral” or “wild” honeybees were on site. In 2021, they caught their first honeybees and started a working hive. Visitors to Southern Highlands Reserve can hear all about bees, hives, and pollinators on docent-led tours.

For those inclined to get up close and personal, local honey can be found at a variety of shops around Brevard and Transylvania County. Killer Bees Honey and Pure Pisgah Honey in Lake Toxaway, and Bee. honey & hive of Brevard are all deliciously buzzy local honey purveyors. Majestic bald eagles nest along the Blue Ridge escarpment near Lake Toxaway, often spotted near Gorges State Park along the Jocassee Gorges Wilderness Area. If you’re lucky, you might also glimpse a golden eagle. For a more relaxed birdwatching experience, the Gorges State Park Visitor Center deck offers plenty of action—keep an eye out for Peregrine Falcons, longtime fans of the Toxaway area’s rock cliffs.
