Grab a friend and a bottle of wine and join PARI for a night of creative expression backed by science!! This Astronomical Artistry Paint Party event will feature the planet Saturn. Its majestic rings, its striking storms, and its myriad of moons will all be sources of inspiration for your masterpiece. Come on your own or round up a group of friends and bring a bottle of wine to enjoy while you paint. A lite snack will be provided. PARI astronomers will talk about both the planet Saturn, and astronomy’s long tradition of using art to bring distant objects within reach. You will be provided everything you need to bring your own vision of Saturn to life on canvas. We will show you some techniques that will help. This introductory workshop is for adults of all fitness levels who identify as women and want to deepen their connection to the wilderness and build their confidence in the outdoors. Learn the basics from trip planning, equipment selection, camp craft, nutrition and camp cooking, shelter and site selection, map reading, and outdoor ethics. Participants are encouraged to take a hands-on approach and learn cooperatively with their classmates, sharing their experience and enthusiasm. This event is a series of two classes followed by a weekend canoe camping trip on the French Broad River. Class 1: Canoeing 101-Part 1. Join Clyde Carter and Jayne Fought for the first in a two-part beginner canoe class. This first class is held on flat water (lake), and instruction is focused on paddling strokes, boat control, maneuvers, equipment, and personal gear. Participants of this course and Canoeing 101 Part 2 will be eligible to sign up for the French Broad Multi-Day Canoe Trip! Boats and equipment provided. May 22, 5:30-8:30pm Class 2: Canoeing 101-Part 2. Join Clyde Carter and Jayne Fought for the second in a two-part beginner canoe class. This first class is held on moving water (river), and Instruction is focused on continuing to develop paddling strokes, boat control, maneuvers, equipment, river reading, and river safety.
