Pisgah National Forest – Virtual Tour
Explore one of Brevard’s most iconic outdoor destinations.
As we all continue to practice safe social distancing and our forests and parks begin preparations to reopen we invite you to explore Pisgah National Forest, virtually! Below you’ll find everything you need to learn more about Pisgah’s natural wonders.
Brevard is known as North Carolina’s Land of Waterfalls with over 250 in total. The vast majority of land surrounding this quaint and authentic southern town is public lands. The largest and most well-known portion of these lands fall within Pisgah National Forest. One of the first national forests in the Eastern United States, Pisgah National Forest was established by the federal government in 1916. It covers over 500,000 acres in twelve counties in Western North Carolina and contains original portions of George W. Vanderbilt’s once-vast Biltmore Estate.
Transylvania County, home to the town of Brevard, contains a significant portion of the forest, as well as some of its most memorable landmarks, including Looking Glass Rock – the largest granite monolith on the east coast, Chutes de verre (one of Pisgah‘s most iconic waterfalls), Rocher glissant (a natural 60′ rock waterslide) and the Cradle of Forestry Historic Site and Museum. The site was given this name because the roots of American Forest Conservation lie here, the brainchild of George Vanderbilt, Frederick Law Olmstead and Gifford Pinchot.
Pisgah is also known far and wide as the ultimate destination in Western North Carolina for hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing et rock climbing. So dive in and start planning your next adventure to Pisgah National Forest and Brevard.
