Opening Day at the Cradle of Forestry celebrates Appalachian culture and heritage from the days of the Biltmore Forest School. Visitors will journey back in time to a small 1900’s mountain community on the historic Biltmore Campus Trail to explore how people of the day worked and played. Guests are encouraged to interact with demonstrators, who bring the community to life with working draft horses, open hearth cooking, old time wash, blacksmithing, traditional music and games. This year’s opening day is included in the Appalachian Folkways series, focusing on the theme of farming, food and family traditions.
