The Brevard College Theatre Program is proud to present the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Crimes of the Heart,” February 11 – 14 in the Porter Center for the Performing Arts’ Morrison Playhouse at Brevard College. Guest Artist Catherine Barricklow will direct.
“’Crimes’ is undeniably entertaining, thought-provoking, unsettling enough to nudge us to take an honest look at our own lives, but in an instant surprises us with a laugh, and offers a reason to celebrate,” Barricklow said.

This Southern comedy is the perfect Valentine’s weekend entertainment: the play is a hysterical roller-coaster ride through the reality of family, relationships, loss and longing.

Set in Mississippi in 1974, “Crimes of the Heart” is a tale of three sisters at a time of family crisis: Babe, the youngest sister is in jail after shooting her husband in the stomach. Lenny, the oldest, finds herself the lonely caretaker of an aging patriarch. And Meg, a would-be singer, wrestles with a failing career and desires to rekindle things with an old beau.

The family’s troubles are grave, serious – their trauma runs deep, and yet their means of coping are somehow hilarious, absurd, and undeniably familiar.

“’Crimes of the Heart’ is an absolutely delicious piece of theatre. It offers phenomenal material for the actors – particularly in the women’s roles,” Barricklow said. “This is just the kind of challenge the students in the BC theatre program are ready to sink their teeth into – and it is a total treat for audiences to watch!”

The cast includes Brevard College students Lily Bartleson, Hannah Leonard, Sarah Haga, Garrett Rhodes and Josh Goldstein. Scenic and lighting design by Andrea Boccanfuso, costumes by Ida Bostian, sound design by Brandon Smith, all Brevard College Theatre faculty.

“I can’t help it – I have to say, it would be a crime to miss this production!” Barricklow added.

Performances are 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday February 11- 13, and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 14. Tickets are $5 each, and are available at etix.com, Southern Comfort Records in Brevard, or one hour before the show at the door.
