Great and amazing local talent!!

On 7/16/15 Slick was riding bicycle at Lake Lure and had a freak accident that injured the spine from C3-C6. He started at Mission being diagnosed as a quadriplegic. He had surgery that night that involved inserting a metal plate to stabilize his neck to protect the spinal cord. On 7/22/15 they placed a trachea telling the family that he would never breathe, eat or drink on his on again and he would be placed in a nursing home. His family didn’t believe that and was able to get him accepted in Shepherds in Atlanta in August. When he got settled there the first thing he got to do was eat chocolate pudding and a diet coke. He hadn’t eaten since the accident. At Shepherds he had rehab. He learned how to use a sip and puff chair. He had a DPS (diaphragm pacing system) placed to stimulate the diaphragm so he can breathe without a ventilator. (Praise Jesus!!). Shepherds was awesome. The facility done wonderful things and gave him hope for the future!! Leaving there in October he went to Asheville Specialty Hospital. They took good care of him with more therapy but because insurance wouldn’t pay for him to stay longer he moved again. At the Bryan Center in Charlotte he stayed for a month. Megan worked hard and found him a vehicle and fought to get him home before Christmas. He moved in with Megan, Scott and Chloe a week before Christmas. Since he has been home things have been good besides fighting to get insurance approvals (constant battle!!!!) for private duty nurses. He has been in hospital 3 times with pneumonia. Quadriplegics are prone to pneumonia. Insurance is a constant and tricky battle. The medical bills are significant and will only increase with him requiring 24 hr. care. Slick is a great guy and has and will “talk your ears off.” That is him, that is. 1 of the many reasons we love and enjoy him. He has helped many in the past. Let’s all join together and support him.
