Join authors Janet Garrity Saucier and Les Saucier as they share and sign copies of their beautiful book, Mountain Blue.
Mountain Blue is a coffee-table style book featuring more than 150 vivid color original photographs taken by the authors over two decades. Also included in the book is text about how the ancient Southern Appalachian Mountains were formed, and other written tributes to characteristics that make the mountains like no other place in the world, such as the blue mist that is unique and so well known.
Brevard, NC authors and photographers Les and Janet Saucier will present a talk titled “It All Starts with Bacon – Two Foodie Photographers’ View of America’s Southern Appalachian Mountains” at Highland Books on Saturday, November 3, 2018, at 11am. Janet Garrity Saucier and Les Saucier, who are both professional photographers, educators, and authors of the book “Mountain Blue, the Beauty and Grandeur of America’s Southern Appalachian Mountains”, will share their stories, photos, and some of the best locations to view “the gifts” received from “our mountains.” A book signing will be held after the talk.
The couple’s book Mountain Blue is a celebration of the beauty and a tribute to the Blue Ridge, the Smokies, the culture, and the biodiversity found only in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. “We wanted to share our vision of what it’s like to be in this special place,” said Les Saucier. “There’s no where else on earth like it. As photographers, in order to celebrate their beauty, one has to show up. Meaning that on some days, we’re eating bacon way before the sun comes up. That’s what it takes at times to really witness the wonders of these mountains.”
The title of the Saucier’s presentation not only refers to the early hours that are sometimes required, but also their love of good food and the four special recipes they’ve included in the book. “Les and I love to photograph together and cook together. ‘It all starts with bacon’ is a catch phrase we use that began with our collards recipe, which is in the book, and has taken on the meaning that anything that’s not easy, but worth doing, ‘starts with bacon,'” Janet Saucier explains. “Early hours to catch the right light, publishing a book, standing in the freezing cold at an overlook as the sun sets; it all starts with bacon.”
