The area’s unique geology has created a one-of-a-kind landscape, loved by both climbers and hikers, as well as gorgeous views of iconic natural geologic wonders just waiting to be explored. 1 1 LOOKING GLASS ROCK The striking white granite face of this 4,000-foot tall pluton monolith in Pisgah National Forest is one of Transylvania County’s most recognizable landmarks. Named for the way its face looks into the sunlight, Looking Glass Rock is visible from the Blue Ridge Parkway, Black Balsam, and the top of Mt Pisgah. Hikers and climbers eager for a more up close and personal view can access it via a steep and challenging trail (6.4 miles out and back to summit) off the graveled FS 475 just south of Looking Glass Falls on 276. Trailhead parking is .4 miles in on the right. 2 2 DEVIL’S COURTHOUSE The gnarled face and large size of this bare rock profile has inspired folklore for centuries. In Cherokee tales, it is the dwelling place of a giant named Judulla. More recently, tellers of tall tales have speculated that the devil himself made his home at a secret cave within. Whatever the case, it’s a stunning sight from the Blue Ridge Parkway that offers a short, somewhat strenuous hike to a summit with nearly... Read More

Four Ways To Be “One” With Our White Squirrels You don’t have to spend much time in Brevard before you catch sight of the four paws and fluffy white tail of Transylvania County’s most beloved local mascot, the white squirrel. From shops on Main Street with countless souvenirs to the official White Squirrel Institute to the actual critters themselves, scampering across lawns and into the tree branches surrounding Brevard, white squirrels are everywhere. 1 1 LEARN THEIR HISTORY The story of how white squirrels came to reside in Transylvania County has a whiff of legend about it. A longstanding theory has it that a carnival animal truck in Florida overturned in the 1940s, “freeing” a pair of white squirrels. The squirrels were corralled by a gentleman who gifted them to a friend in Brevard who in turn gave them to his niece. Over time, one of the squirrels escaped and the other was set free. The rest is (extremely cute) history. 2 2 ADOPT A WHITE SQUIRREL Brevard’s white squirrels are not albinos, in fact, they’re actually a color variation within the same species as the common gray squirrel. The White Squirrel Institute supports programs that keep track of the local population with an annual count, as well as rescue and rehabilitation. Their popular Adopt-A-Squirrel Program allows humans to support their cause with a donation. 3 3 MEET A CELEBRITY WHITE SQUIRREL Pisgah Penny, a rescue squirrel turned local celebrity, sometimes puts in an appearance at Brevard events. Notably,... Read More
Gears and Gills Double your fun by combining two favorite outdoor activities. The public lands in Transylvania County serve as the backdrop for myriad outdoor activities. For many, it means an opportunity to combine their favorite hobbies. Here are three great starter tips. 1 1 KEEP IT SIMPLE Brevard resident Christian McLauchlin is a passionate mountain biker. But he also enjoys wetting a line from time to time. He likes nothing better than to combine his two passions, especially in the summer. “In the summer you don’t need boots and waders,” McLauchlin says. “So, all you really need is your flies, rod and reel and a pair of good sandals.” The minimal gear can easily be carried in a small backpack. What McLauchlin likes most about using his mountain bike is that it can take him to places he wouldn’t fly fish otherwise. “It allows you to get into places that people can’t get to from their car or that would require a long hike,” McLauchlin says. The appeal is obvious: fewer people, more fish and a more enjoyable experience. 2 2 DISCOVER TENKARA If you want to go super minimalist on fly fishing gear, Kevin Howell at Davidson River Outfitters suggests looking into the art of tenkara. Originating in Japan, this ancient form of fly fishing relies on very simple equipment that can easily be broken down or telescoped to fit in a small backpack. In Japanese, the word “tenkara” translates into “fishing from the skies.” Tenkara... Read More

Tails on The Trail Five Tips for Traveling with Your Favorite Four-Legged Friend Dogs make great travel and trail buddies, and in Transylvania County, we’re particularly fond of Fido and all his furry friends. But before you and your best canine buddy set off on a Brevard and Transylvania County adventure, here are a few tips to make sure that both of you have the safest and happiest experience possible: 1 1 Lead by Example. While dogs are welcome on trails and at campsites in our public lands (and at many businesses in town), it is critically important, for your dog’s safety and that of others, that he stays on leash and under control. Officials in our public lands will enforce this rule. 2 2 Mind the Water. Brevard’s plentiful water features, including its 250 waterfalls, are popular destinations for curious humans and canines. But for everyone’s safety, it’s important to keep a particular eye on your pup whenever the two of you are near the water’s edge, especially the waterfalls. Dogs are allowed in canoes and kayaks on guided trips, however, dogs are not permitted on tubes or to slide down Sliding Rock. 3 3 Pick It Up: Dogs can be great helpers, but they need our help with housekeeping. Please clean up after your dog. It is one of the best and easiest ways to take care of our towns and wilderness areas and truly leave them better. 4 4 Give Your Pooch His Own Space. While... Read More
